NEW! Now with extended chew time…
The world on forensics has presented me with a potential new assignment. Apparently our across sea ties have been supplying potato starch to the pet industry with a devastating consequence.
Since the economy of America has caused the significant slowdown of home building, the need for adhesives in the manufacturing of particle boards and plywood has declined. Europeans have been supplying China and other Asian countries with a potato starch made from the potato, Amflora.
Amflora is a genetically modified (GM) potato grown in Europe for the sole reason of producing, pure amylopectin starch used in technical applications such as adhesives and textiles. The economic crisis has caused a glut of potato starch being marketed through Chinese brokers for use in pet foods as a “normal” edible potato starch. Apparently the Chinese and other Asian countries have been selling glue to pets for some time.

Twice the chew time just as nutritious
The friendly spud has been genetically modified in such a way as to render its starch into a glue, strong enough to bind wood fibers. Now you know why some dog chews seem “plastic” and indestructible. The Chinese are also using the starch in the production of Chicken Jerky, Beef treats and a variety of inexpensive treats for sale in the US.
Thousands of pet owners have been unexpectedly feeding their pets glue; made in China should be identified before use. Huge profits have been made by US companies using pet products unfit for landfill, and the executives are living like BP executives. What will it take to wake up the American pet owner to the destruction “cheap-treats” are doing? Potato based pet products from China are more than likely glue in disguise.

Thank you for this info. I would recommend pet owners to call their pet food company to find out which country they are sourcing their potato starch from and if they are using the Amflora potato. If they don’t give you their source, find another company.
Dr. Pusillo – can mention the companies that are using this potato starch?
How did you learn of this?
Is it only “cheap” treats or is it also in quality kibbles & treats?
Many years ago, I bought Nylabone which is made with potato starch. I stopped buying rubber toys as well and never buy rawhide. I buy fleece toys which is made in China.

Fascinating. The lack of control on the safety of pet products astounds me every day. And I am in the industry.

This is terrible….I am glad you have this info to share with us. The 2007 pet food recall was bad enough…now yet another “situation”. Thanks for the info….you are very appreciated…
