A Wolf Dressed Like A…Pretzel?!

In the world of fat supplements for animals most supplement and feed companies treat your pet as if you were at a Pretzel stand. To the traditional supplement and feed companies your pet only needs the “pretzel” that they sell no matter the species, age or physical condition of your pet. If you have a Amazon parrot, “give them one of our pretzels”. If you have a poodle, “give them one of our pretzels”. If you have a tiger “give them a big one of our pretzels”. If you need something a little bit different in taste , “give them our pretzel with our all inclusive sauce”.

Each and every animal is treated as though it was a tourist in Disneyland wanting a pretzel. The problem that so many animal supplement and feed companies create is that they treat each pet species the same way; each gets the same pretzel despite labeling changes.

The universal pretzel problem in the US is currently being magnified by the belief that all species can use the same fat blend that was originally created for humans, for the animal pet world. Thus we see human “omega 3” products relabeled for cats, dogs, parrots and guinea pigs. They are selling the same pretzel with a different name.

The renamed pretzel problem has created a brand new industry and brand new problems for our beloved pets. Not all species have the same fat supplement requirements so it is important not to give them “pretzels” and call them something different.  Human nutritionists, human supplement and specialty human product boutiques are getting into the pet supplement business with their cutsie advertising and amprophomistic adds that give the impression that our pets are simply hairy little humans with tails and claws. Companies selling products designed for humans and marketed as the ideal healthy fat or essential fatty acid product for your pet have polluted the specialty fat supplement market for pets. Equally as damaging is those companies that are selling livestock products as “specifically designed for you pet”. Many of the so called pet Omega 3 supplements are nothing more than horse supplements masquerading as pretzels. A big soft pretzel is a pretzel no matter what you call it!  A cat and dog are not a horse when it comes to the finer details of essential fatty acid levels and ratios. If so then cats would eat baled hay and oats instead of mice and other meats, and horses would be chasing the mice in barns for a quick snack.

Deception and perception still cannot convince the true nature of a pretzel. No matter what you call it and label it, a big soft human pretzel is still a pretzel.  The essential fatty acid market; Omega 3 etc. is growing like crazy but at the expense of our pets health and well being. Initially pets will see improved hair coats and skin, but if the formula is not for the intended species many normal body functions and organs will begin to become abnormal.  Please be careful and do not be swayed to believe that a pretzel is something other than a pretzel. Remember that there is only one human species and over 4000 animal species so not every human pretzel (Essential fatty acid supplement) will be appropriate for every species.
Buy the pretzel for yourself and stick to a professionally formulated animal supplement specific for your pet.

Amen to this! I use supplements for myself but would never use the same ones on my pets! That’s absurd! I found some supplements by Melaleuca to work best for me but I usse Dinovite for my dogs.

I got good advice for diet and other natural tips and suggestions online by filling out a health guide. I got emailed a great list of suggestions specifically for my dog, based on issues, size, age, etc. It’s not a one size fits all approach for my dog!

I actually found this on Twitter and it’s been so helpful!

Even cats and dog have different requirements. So, don’t feed your dog cat food, and visa versa.
